When the Interview Process Drags On…and On
So you’ve passed the first and second round of interviews, impressing your interviewers with your sterling credentials, work experience and personality. The fit seems perfect and you’re certain that this last meeting with the managing director is just a ‘rubber stamp’ before you ultimately hear those golden words – “We’d like to make you an offer.” But then the hiring manager tells you that they’d like to see you again to meet with more people, and by the way, they’d like you to do another sample writing project, would you mind? (Resist the temptation to pull your hair out)
Take the story of an equity research analyst we know (we’ll call him Matt), who found himself interviewing for a company that seemed to be in no hurry to hire. After flying out (twice) to New York City from Chicago to interview with this investment management firm, having met 8 different people, spending an entire week doing a company analysis, and meeting with the managing director, the hiring manager asked Matt to meet him at a bar (also in NYC) so they could “chat further.” Matt was sure that he’d walk out of that bar with at least a verbal offer. Instead, the hiring manager asked him to do a second company analysis!
Getting dragged into an excessively high number of interviews can be unbearable, and cost you not only precious mental energy and time (that could be devoted to other job search activity), but also money, if you have to travel a significant distance to the interviewing company’s offices. It would be very easy to lose patience, show your annoyance and have your frustration spill over into your communication with the company. DON’T let that happen. While the seemingly endless interview process can fray your nerves and test your sanity, the good news is that you’re likely very close to an offer, and need to stick it out just a little bit more. Here’s how:
Manage your emotions – Find someone outside of the interview process you can vent your frustrations to, so you can show your best face to the company. You’ll find that having a friend, spouse or someone else in your support system listen to your interview tales will allow you to vent and regroup, so you can make the best impression.
Do the best work you can – If you are asked to provide work samples or to produce a presentation, analysis, business plan or other deliverable as part of the interview process, make sure you leave nothing to chance. Give this assignment your best effort, and avoid the temptation of just repurposing old work you’ve done in the past. While you might save time, the content won’t seem as fresh and therefore, won’t be as impressive.
Re-convey your enthusiasm – At this point, the company will know they are asking a lot of you. They’ll be looking for any hint of resentment or frustration on your part. How badly do you want the job, they’ll wonder. And if this is your attitude when your vying for the job, what will be your attitude when you’re hit with a ton of work after being hired?
Rudyard Kipling once wrote – “If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run…” You’re almost to the end of this ‘race.’ Make sure you finish strong. Good luck.
