Fun Facts and Finds on Copper
The history of copper is truly one for the ages. It’s believed that the metal has been used for over 10,000 years and is one of the earliest metals mined and crafted by man. Copper has greatly contributed to the development of civilization; technology wouldn’t be where it is today without its discovery.
Copper was discovered around 9000 BC in the Middle East, in the highlands of modern Iran. Back then, the population already knew how to extract it and produce ornaments. In fact, a pendant made out of copper was discovered in Iraq dating as far back as 8700 BC. By the year 5000 BC, copper smelting was evident in Anatolia and in the Balkans. Not long after, copper smelting was developed all over the world with China following in 2800 BC, 600 AD in Central America, and West Africa in 900 AD.
Copper crafting reached high levels of intricacy and technicality in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and it was also extracted in Spain during the same period. What’s even more surprising was that copper tubing was used as part of a plumbing system in Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza, which was built in 2560 BC.
Ancient Egyptian papyrus recorded that copper was used to treat certain diseases and sterilize their water. During the middle ages, copper was a very important resource to the Greeks and Romans. It became known as Cyprium, since it was mined in Cyprus. Back then, copper was already being utilized in different applications from decorative ornaments like
